These were the reactions when I heard the music of Gowariker's latest moovie 'What's Your Rashee?' starring Hurman Baweja and ^Priyanka Chopra^.
Javed ' Takkaloos' Akhtar gives words to the really simple and excessively different music by
Sohail Sen. [The latest addition to a great new breed of Hindi music composers].
The album has 13 songs, a song for the 12 Zodiacs each, and one (for lack of better title) 'Title' song.
Along with Shaan, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan we have a bunch of (not so) new singers including Sohail Sen (the composer himself), Bhavya Pandit, Tarannum Malik, Bela Shende, Rajab Ali Bharti, and, *hold your breath* Aslesha and Ashutosh Gowariker. WTF?
'Maanunga Maanunga' makes Ashutosh exercise his vocal chords. Not much of a song though, just sounds like a epilogue with some beats and drama added to it.
Aslesha (sister, Ashutosh Gowariker) on 'Aa Le Chal' is bright. Quite a voice for a lady of her age.
Harman Baweja also makes his presence felt on this song, thankfully with only a few words.
'Pal Pal Jisko Dhonde', 'Jao Na' , 'Aaja Leherate', provide a exzcellent start to the album. 'Pal Pal...' and 'Jao Na' are really melodic songs, without much 'music' !
Sohail Sen ups the tempo with 'Aaja Leherate', which i think is the one of the best songs on the album. The 'zukku zukka, wakhau whakka' beats are quite good. The build up to the end are niecly done. Though the abrupt end to the song is suprising.
'Sau Janam' is sooo reminiscent of the songs of the 80s and early 90s. The lazy beats, the little guitar whizz, the resonating background voices and the merging of the female and male tracks.
Freakily enough, we have Udit Narayan (great songster of the early 90s) and even more freaky is the fact that Madhushree sounds exactly like Sadhana Sargam in the song.
Bela Shende does well on the Hindi-Gujurati number 'Suu Chhe' <>
'Salone Kya' and 'Dhadkan Dhadkan' are the 'now' music. They resemble the music which is the rage nowadays, offbeat music i.e. the whole rigmarole of Quick change of beats, weird sounds et al.
The album ends on a upbeat but sad note with 'Koi Jaane Na' and 'Chehre Jo dekhe hain' ( the aforementioned 'Title' song).
All in all, its definitely worth a listen for it eccentricity. Ka-ching.
P.S. : Thank You XdR and DDR.
Current State of Mind : The WYR OST and Sudden barrage of phone calls.
